Dr. Barakat received his medical degree from the University of Damascus College of Medicine in Damascus, Syria. He went on to complete his internship in Internal Medicine at Michael Reese Hospital at the University of Illinois in Chicago, IL. Dr. Barakat completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, IL before finishing his fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, NM.
Dr. Barakat has received many honors and awards including the Resident of the Year Award from Mercy Hospital and Medical Center at the University of Illinois, the Excellence in Research Award at the Southwest Young Investigators Conference in Sedona, AZ and the Scholar Award Winner Abstract at the Western Regional Conference in Carmel, CA.
Prior to joining Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology, Dr. Barakat held positions as Acting Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Director of Gastroenterology and Biliary Endoscopy, Assistant Professor of Medicine in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Associate Professor of Medicine in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of New Mexico/VA Health Care System in Albuquerque, NM.
Dr. Barakat is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
